The Toddler Who Dreams of Flying a Plane

Meet sweet little Alian Walwigi. He’s only 1,000 days into his adventure on earth, but he’s wasted no time dreaming up some big plans!

About Alian:
– Alian’s grandmother has taken care of him for his whole life. Despite his age, he lightens his grandmother’s load by helping with chores, whether that involves fetching water from the well, collecting firewood, or sweeping the kitchen.
– His favorite color is green.
– Alian loves goats because they chew grass while shaking their ears.
– Some of his favorite foods include fish and an African dish called matooke, which you can learn more about here!
Alian hopes that someday he will become a pilot! He has always loved to watch planes fly through the sky, and whenever he sees them, he dreams that someday he might be flying up there, too.
Alian’s birthday is just around the corner: October 24th! He’ll be turning three this year. What birthday present could be better than to enable and empower him to pursue his precious dream?!

If you want to be part of helping Alian’s dream become reality,

explore the possibility of sponsoring him!

ROWAN prioritizes meeting the basic human needs of the orphans and widows in Uganda who have been impacted by AIDS, but we don’t stop there.
We support our orphans and widows until they are able to sustain themselves WITH NO CUT-OFF AGE! Furthermore, we walk with them as they pursue self-sustenance, providing everything from healthy, consistent meals and education/literacy classes to medical care and entrepreneurship training.

Celebrate the Women of Uganda!

Last week women around the globe celebrated International Women’s Day!
According to, the ten International Women’s Day values are:

*Dignity *Hope *Equality *Collaboration *Tenacity
*Appreciation *Respect *Empathy *Forgiveness *Justice

The women that we are privileged to work with in Mawanga and surrounding communities embody these qualities. So many of them have overcome major adversity and have grown to be respected in their villages. They have forgiven wrongs against them and they strive for equality for themselves and their daughters. They work together to ease the burdens of others and they work hard to accomplish their goals and dreams.

We have seen their lives transformed by the love of Jesus — now they have hope for the future.

We have seen our women reach their savings goals, after being equipped with the training to put aside a little bit each week. We have seen that grow into enterpreneurship and they have taught us so much about persevering in order to accomplish what they set out to do. These women are my heroes and some of the most giving people I have ever encountered.

Women’s rights are human rights. But in these troubled times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed.
Empowering women and girls is the only way to protect their rights and make sure they can realize their full potential.

We encourage them to pursue education and to learn new skills in order to improve their earning potential, but we strive to foster sustainable practices. We rejoice with our women and girls who graduate with a degree, build a successful business in their community or band together to rebuild houses. So many stories of hope and victory have emerged from this ministry ROWAN has in Uganda.

Denying the rights of women and girls is not only wrong in itself; it has a serious social and economic impact that holds us all back. Gender equality has a transformative effect that is essential to fully functioning communities, societies and economies.
Women’s access to education and health services has benefits for their families and communities that extend to future generations. An extra year in school can add up to 25 per cent to a girl’s future income.

We would love for YOU to partner with us as we continue to provide more opportunities for these amazing women! Help us empower these people.

And if you ever get the chance to visit Mawanga — know that you will be welcomed and loved by these dear ladies. Everyone who has experienced it knows there is nothing like being welcomed into the village.
Sponsor a Widow or Orphan Today!

Sponsorship and Sewing Machines

Sponsor today!
This was a gift Esther never dreamed she would own. The simple act of sending this made a lasting impact. One of our sponsors gave Esther, a widow in our ministry, a sewing machine! She started shedding tears, she could not believe someone thought to give her something so special. She can use this to help build a business and be able to provide for her family by having a steady income.
Sponsorship is more than a monthly donation. It is more than provision for education, food and medicine. At ROWAN we strive to accomplish so much more through our sponsorship program. We want to connect people to each other, to encourage you to build a relationship with the orphan or widow that you sponsor.

There is a chance to correspond with the individual, to learn their greatest joys and deepest struggles — so much more than just their material needs.

The opportunity to travel and meet them to see firsthand where they live and how they are thriving is a very real possibility. I did it and it changed the way I think about sponsoring. We promote the idea of empowerment and value the partnership between sponsors to assist in that process. But we also want our sponsors to gain something from this interaction and to continue to grow through this relationship. One way that is becoming more accessible is through our online platform for sponsorship.

They are Precious in His Sight

“Jesus loves the little children — ALL the children of the world.”

Sometimes this ministry of helping orphans can seem overwhelming. So many have lost one or both of their parents to disease or poverty. My heart aches for those who are hurting — specifically those who are orphaned and suffering from the life circumstances that have been dealt to them. Oh, that I could hold them close and whisper to them how much they are loved. Oh, that I could somehow end the injustices towards these poor little ones!
But I know we serve a great God, a loving Father. And He sees these children and knows their hearts.

He holds them in the palm of His hand and He has a divine plan for each and every one of them.

Will you pray about being part of that plan? We have so many who are waiting for a sponsor…could it be YOU?

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Less than $2 a day adds up over the years and eventually can lead to great success. Don’t underestimate the impact sponsorship can have on shaping young lives and empowering our students to succeed.
Mariam is our most recent graduate and her story is evidence of that success. She has been part of ROWAN since it officially began in 2008. She is an individual who is not afraid to speak her mind, and that started when she was young. In a culture where women do not have a strong voice, this was significant. ROWAN helped to cultivate her intelligence and confident spirit by giving her opportunities to hone these skills. Mariam always participated in ROWAN events and loved to emcee at parties and tell jokes to make people smile.
mass communication degree
This led to a desire to pursue a degree in mass communication and journalism at Mutesa Royal University. She wants to make a difference in her nation, especially regarding speaking up for women. This past weekend she graduated with her bachelors degree and already has a job lined up at a radio station in Iganga (East Uganda). She is so thankful to her sponsor, her ROWAN family and caregiver Rebecca for supporting her and helping her to achieve her dreams.

We could not be more proud of Mariam and we know that God will use her voice to help young women just like her in the future!

Do YOU want to be a part of our success stories? There are other students waiting to be sponsored so they too can have the chance to reach their goals and effect become agents of change in their country.

ROWAN is a faith-based community of widows, widowers, caregivers and orphans affected by the plight of HIV/AIDS. We have been in existence since 2008 and are now supporting over 300 members across 30 villages. Together we create holistic approaches toward poverty alleviation, resulting in self-reliance.
ROWAN supports the widow or orphan until they are able to sustain themselves with no cut off age. We see students finish school and begin their first jobs; we train widows on starting their own businesses, save and take care of their family. You get to be a vital part of their journey!

Every widow a leader; every orphan a beloved child.

Every single person in this world craves connection. We were created in the image of God and He is a relational being. And every child desires to be wanted; to be loved. Our motto here at ROWAN is for every orphan to become a beloved child. In God’s eyes each individual is unique and worthy of unconditional love. Many wonder why we don’t have an orphanage to care for these children. It is our firm belief that they should belong somewhere, so we try to put them into a family unit. Because of the devastation HIV/AIDS has had in these villages, at times it can be difficult to find someone to care for these orphans. Grandparents will often take in their grandchildren after losing their children to this horrible disease. ROWAN strives to empower and encourage sustainability. So while we can’t take in each one of these orphans, we can support those in the community who choose to do so. Would you be willing to help us in this endeavor?
And then there are the widows…and widowers who have lost a spouse, and often the means to be able to provide for their families. We work with these caregivers to train them in business, to teach them to farm various crops and to develop a habit of saving their hard-earned money. We partner with other organizations like Little Man Ice Cream to be able to provide rice for them and their children. We empower them to change their futures and become leaders in their communities, while showing them how much Jesus loves them. Won’t you be a part of supporting them so they can raise their children to effect change in Uganda?

Sponsorship starts at $38 a month – that’s $1.26 a day!

Your contribution will help change the lives of women and children in Uganda. ROWAN has recently moved to a new sponsorship software for easy payment updates and access to your sponsorship profiles. There are numerous advantages to our new system. We pray that this new software will connect you even closer to your widow/child, and we are excited to make this possible!
