Stop the Cycle of AIDS
Mother-to-Child Transmission Facts:
The transmission of HIV from an HIV-positive mother to her child during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding is called mother-to-child transmission. In the absence of any interventions transmission rates range from 15-45%. This rate can be reduced to levels below 5% with effective interventions. World Health Organization, 2012
Three major challenges:
- Providing preventative training for the hundreds of mothers in our region.
- Treatment of opportunistic infections in mothers and newborns.
- Godly counsel for mothers/widows living with HIV.
Uganda Facts on Healthcare:
Although Uganda was seen as a success story after its HIV/AIDS victim population declined from 13% to 4.1% of the population, the facts still are sobering. Only 42 percent of Ugandans have access to proper sanitation. There are only .92 hospital beds per 1,000 people. On average, a mere. 08 physicians serve 1,000 people. 57.78 percent of the female population lives with HIV. A total of 884,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS. (Uganda is ranked fifth highest out of 80 countries.) Click here for more statistics on Uganda.
ROWAN’s Response:
As of December 2012, ROWAN has created the “Stop the Cycle” Campaign to stop AIDS from spreading through mother-to-child transmission. ROWAN currently has 12 mothers with HIV/AIDS: 4 of them are pregnant and 8 have new born babies. The cost to care for these mothers is nothing compared to the priceless gift of saving their child. Here’s how you can help!!
