Memoirs of Mzungus (traveler)

To a Mzungu, Africa is full of a million idiosyncrasies. There are miles of unpaved, pot-holed roads; rows of mud huts that line the Nile River; acres of untamed rainforest, teeming with Lion King-ish wildlife; thousands of people with beautiful, ebony skin—the list could go on forever. We who have been able to travel to Mawanga know these things, and we also know that those who have not had that privilege to physically visit cannot necessarily picture it–the people, the places, the things and ideas–as well as we can.
So, here are a few of our stories, just for you. If you are thinking about getting involved with ROWAN, we hope these little anecdotes help you picture the beauty of what it is you are getting involved with. If you are contemplating donating some of your hard-earned money, we hope you realize that by doing so you really are making a difference in someone’s everyday life; that despite the fact that you’re simply clicking a paypal button, you feel as if you’ve been there, too–you’ve walked down the bushy trails, taken strolls to the waterhole, run through rice paddies and traveled down the Mini-Mawangan highway. We hope you feel like you’ve met the people that we have met, and we hope you fall in love with them like we did.
In short, welcome! As the Mawangans have taught us so well, what is ours is already yours.
